English Longbow

The Welchman English Longbow is the culmination of two great traditions: the legendary military warbow of Cresy and Agincourt, and the traditions of American bow hunting pioneers like Dr. Saxon Pope and Maurice Thompson.

The deep "D" cross section of the English limb is its main identifier along with the polished cow horn nocks. The backing of rawhide is an American innovation started by Dr. Pope to protect the bow face from damage during the rigors of the hunt. A leather handle—either hunter or wrapped style—speaks of its hunting purpose, preferred over the velvet handle wrapping born from the gentlemanly art of lawn archery.

A modern, no maintenance finish is used to protect and waterproof the bow. Multiple layers of an exterior polyurethane marine spar varnish are applied from maximum protection. The horn nocks—either hunter or tournament style—are impervious to moisture and are polished, not painted.

The English Longbow's backing is a special white processed rawhide used only to protect the face. It does not add or subtract from the cast of the bow. Backing is optional and the bow may be ordered without rawhide.

The English Longbow comes with two Flemish strings and a bow sock.

Warbow

The Welchman Warbow is a replica of the magnificent medieval military longbow of Edward II and Henry V.

As it was required by medieval English law, only the very best "Spanish quality" Yew staved were used for the Warbow. It is in this tradition of quality that only one stave in 100 can qualify as Welchman Warbow material.

According to military specifications, this bow has no handle wrapping. (There were no waterproof glues then so handle wrapping was out of the question.) There is also no backing and the cow horn battle knocks are unpolished.

The location of arrow passage is marked by a bowyer's groove on the side of the bow. Above the bowyer's groove is the "bowyer's mark," which was unique to each medieval bowyer.

The Warbow is protected with several coats of oil and wax finish and hand rubbed to a silky smoothness.

This is a high quality, no nonsense, uncompromising military weapon, unparalleled in the pages of history.

The Warbow comes with two Flemish strings and a bow sock.

Flatbow

For those who love the American self Flatbow with the excellence of high quality Yew.

The Flatbow has self nocks reinforced with beautifully polished cow horn. As with the English style bow, the Flatbow is backed with rawhide (can be ordered without rawhide backing). The handle cover choice is solid leather "Hunter" style or the more eloquent "Wrapped" style.

The Flatbow comes with two Flemish strings and a bow sock.

Care Information:

Bow Care Tips:

  • Keep bow away from excessive heat including: closed inside a hot car, left in hot sun, stored in a container in direct sun, hung over indoor heating vents or sorces.
  • Not recommended to be shot above 110°F or below 20°F.
  • Give a light coat of car or floor wax prior to being used all day in the rain or before being treated with camoflauge paint.
  • DO NOT dry next to an open flame.
  • DO NOT use Fast Flight String.

Stringing the Bow:

  • The standard "push-pull" method is suggested. Make sure the nock on the bottom is settled into the instep of your of your foot at about the area of the nock groove.
  • DO NOT apply pressure on the nock tip.
  • DO NOT bend the lower limb over the knee to get more leverage if unable to string using the "push-pull" method, otherwise the bow will likely break.
  • Stringers should not be used on horn nocked bows. Stress applied to the tips of the nocks could break them.
  • DO NOT allow the bow to be pulled beyond the draw length established on the side of he bow handle. If over-drawn, loss of draw weight at the established length will occur.
  • New string will stretch for awhile. Two or three adjustments will be required befre settling into the bow.
  • To shorten string, twist counter clockwise.
  • To lengthen string, twist clockwise.
